HELPFUL HINTS

How to care for your suit

The Best Way to clean your suit from unwanted fibers and particles is to use a horse hair brush and lightly brush them off. We do not recommend dry cleaning, as it will damage the precious wool fibers of your suit.

  • Use a damp cloth to clean spoiled areas. Give the suit a brush using the horse hair brush once dry. This is the best way to maintain your suit jacket.
  • Your trousers should be brushed with a damp horse hair brush after every use. After cleaning your trousers should be hung upside down from a hanger to dry, this will maintain their shape whilst drying.

The suits in my family are never dry cleaned. My grandfather’s suits were always cleaned like this and lasted between 10 and 20 years. His clients often praised his high quality of work and I strive to achieve the same quality in my clothing range.

Pressing your suit

Have your jackets and trousers repressed ever so often, perhaps the trousers once a month to keep a sharp look. To avoid disappointment we offer a suit pressing service: send your suit in, at Hejda we look after it professionally. We hand press your garments without changing the shape and look of them.

Should you send your suit to the drycleaner, try to do it as less as possible, every couple of years for the jacket may all it needs to make you happy and get us to hand-press it for you to avoid disappointment.

Travelling with your suit

The most common way to transport your suit is by protecting it in a suit carry bag, which we provide with every suit purchase. This is the best way to transport your suit whilst maintaining its shape and Quality.

Although using a suit bag isn’t always convenient, you may want to pack your suit into your suitcase. Here are the steps I take when travelling with out a suit carry bag, which rarely occurs.

  • Firstly put everything else in, pack your suit last and place it over a fairly even packed suitcase.
  • Unbutton your suit and place it in the suitcase with the collar and shoulders touching the upper case wall, overlap the front halves so the suit is crease free. Fold the sleeves one by one over the chest as if you would be crossing your arms then fold the bottom half of your suit up towards the neck and shoulders with the back facing you now.
  • Your trousers are best folded in half or thirds depending on the size of your case, put them on top of the jacket.
  • Should you be packing several suits repeat this process for each suit however start on alternate luggage side walls so you end up with shoulder pads on each case wall.
  • When you have reached your destination unpack your suit immediately and hang the jacket separately on a wooden hanger if available, hang the trousers upside down to maintain a sharp front pleat, use clip hangers if available,
  • Have your suit drop all creases; turn on a hot shower for 5 minutes to create a warm, humid environment for your suit. Leave it hanging in there until draping smoothly, preferable over night.
  • You may give your trousers a slight press afterwards to establish a sharp front pleat. ( link to U-tube video) With a warm to hot iron press firmly down on pleated trouser leg starting from the hem (put a damp tea towel or linen cloth over the wool to prevent the iron from giving your trousers sheen) lift the iron to move up the pleat before pressing it down again along the perfectly folded trouser legs bit by bit until you reach the thigh/ pocket area, stop about 20 cm below the waistband.
  • Enjoy your time away from home in your ‘new’ suit, which will look as if you just took delivery.

How to wear your suit

The traditional way to wear a suit is certainly with a white, crisp, cotton shirt. This classic look which shows 1/2 inch of the shirt above the suit lapel (collar of jacket) and the jacket’s sleeve hem, is the distinguishing detail obeyed by all well-dressed Gentleman in the western hemisphere.

Besides being a smart look, it protects the fine woollen suit material from body oils and perspiration. As we all know hundreds of years ago dry-cleaning was not an option to clean a suit, however white shirts or at least the detachable collars and cuffs could easily be washed daily and kept white by boiling them in a copper tub over the laundry fire, some of you may even remember your mum or grandma doing so.

Today wearing a suit with a white crisp shirt clearly communicates class and implies a wealthy background as much as it was then, hundred years ago when only the ruling class and later the wealthy middle class were able to maintain such an life style on a daily basis.

The refined world we live in however has not stopped to develop endless variations of the same principle, to be distinct and to communicate your social standing by dressing accordingly.

You may not like to wear your Italian made Intermongolian cashmere jacket casually, for example with a collar- and sleeveless top and with unlined silken chinos, however it is certainly a distinctive, luxurious look communicating to your wealthy, educated equals abundance and modern believes.

At Hejda you will not only be fitted, at Hejda we tailor your wardrobe according to your needs, your intended message and how you would like to be perceived.
